Dr. Gerhard Schwarz
The President of the Progress Foundation, journalist and author in conversation with economic historian Prof. Dr. Tobias Straumann
Die Schweiz hat Zukunft – Von der positiven Kraft der Eigenart
Switzerland has a future – On the positive power of singularity
In his latest essay, Schwarz shows how Switzerland’s identity-forming political characteristics can be further developed. What makes the country unique – a special case celebrated by some and demonized by others – are its political institutions. They hold together this nation of wills full of contrasts between young and old, rich and poor, city and country, immigrants and natives, between regions, religions, languages and cultures.
Gerhard Schwarz (*1951), Dr. oec., studied economics in St. Gallen, Great Barrington (Mass.) and Cambridge (Mass.). From 1994 to 2010 he was head of the NZZ economics editorial department, and from 2008 to 2010 deputy editor-in-chief. Until 2016 he was director of the think tank Avenir Suisse, since then he has worked as a publicist and president of the Progress Foundation.
Tobias Straumann, born in 1966, is an economic historian and titular professor of modern history at the University of Zurich. He studied in Bielefeld, Paris and Zurich, was a senior lecturer at the University of Lausanne and spent visiting semesters at the University of California at Berkeley, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Oxford.
