Middle East: Confrontation or de-escalation?
(Naher und Mittlerer Osten: Konfrontation oder De-Eskalation?)
Recent events and developments around Iran and Iraq have once again raised tensions in the Middle East. The question is whether we need to have a policy of escalation, or whether the individual players are gradually showing a sustained willingness to conduct negotiations that could lead to a lasting stabilization of the region. Volker Perthes, Director of the renowned Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), Berlin, takes a position on this topic, which has also made a name for itself through numerous publications on the Middle East.
Volker Perthes, born in 1958, is director of the Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), which primarily advises the German Bundestag and the Federal Government on foreign and security policy issues, and teaches as an extra-planned professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin. From 2015 to 2018, he supported the UN Special Envoy for Syria and headed the UN Cease Fire Task Force (CTF) for Syria from 2016 to 2018. Perthes is a member of a number of scientific advisory councils and a much-sought commentator.
