Middle East: Confrontation or de-escalation?
(Naher und Mittlerer Osten: Konfrontation oder De-Eskalation?)
Recent events and developments around Iran and Iraq have once again raised tensions in the Middle East. The question is whether we need to have a policy of escalation, or whether the individual players are gradually showing a sustained willingness to conduct negotiations that could lead to a lasting stabilization of the region. Volker Perthes, Director of the renowned Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), Berlin, takes a position on this topic, which has also made a name for itself through numerous publications on the Middle East.
